EUGENE: Daddy gets me a job at Georgia Pacificâthe work is tough. Iâm chopping, lifting lumberâmy hands are getting cutâthe heat is unbearableââDaddy itâs really hot. Iâd like to get some water.â (ROBERT) âStop calling me âDaddyââyou call me âSIR.ââ
ALMA: I buy these summer dresses to go to work inâI know Iâm only working in a Woolworthâs but I want to look niceâ
EUGENE: Some of the guys I went to school with are working in the lumberyardâthe dark-skinned guys are working in the lumberyard. (Voices) âOle pretty yella nigga canât handle the heat.â âSoft yella bitch.â âPretty, yella, and soft.â (Beat) (EUGENE) Daddy laughs along with the dark-skinned guys.
ALMA: Iâm also putting money aside for fall clothesâI never really had to think about that, fall clothes, clothes for the âfallââI look forward to wearing âfallâ clothesâI look forward to the âfall.â
EUGENE: I mention Almaâs leaving to Wyce. He says, (WYCE) âMan, I hear when bitches get up there to New York, they hook up with some of those dudes up there and TOTALLY forget about the southâthey get NEW YORK fever, man.â
ALMA: Odelia says (ODELIA) âWastinâ money buyinâ all dat mess. Some oâ dat money could come in heah to dis house.â (ALMA) I look down and at her and say âThis money is going toward school and NOTHING else.â
EUGENE: (Beat) Iâm watching her change. She no longer has the Geechie accent. Sheâs wearing makeup, straightening her hair, and bought these clothes. Iâve never seen her look this good. I mean she ALWAYS looks good to me but now sheâs looking beautifulâsheâs looking incredibly beautiful. Sheâs looking like this about to leave meâNext thing I know the summer is gone and Iâm taking Alma to the train.
ALMA: As weâre driving, I notice how different Russelville is looking alreadyâ
EUGENE: Sheâs chattering away about the dorm room and how she hopes she and her roommate get alongâ
ALMA: We get to the station. We have a little time before the train comes. We start kissing. I pull away and say âYou taste like liquorââ
EUGENE: âI had to steady my nervesââmy nerves were shotâ
ALMA: We continue to kissâwe kissâlong, hard, deepâ
EUGENE: Sheâs looking beautiful and kissing me like she never kissed me before. Sheâs holding me closeâreal close, running her hands down my backâ
ALMA: The train gets here. We put my bags on the train and kiss some more. The train pulls away and Eugene is running with the train blowing kisses like they do in the moviesâ
EUGENE: I run and run and runâ
ALMA: Iâm wearing full makeupâIâm wearing one of my pretty dresses fully made upâ
EUGENE: I keep running until I canât run anymoreâ
ALMA: Iâm applying, reapplying lipstick, putting on different colorsâ
EUGENE: I watch the train until it totally disappearsâ
ALMA: Odelia cooked a tremendous amount of foodâall this fried chicken, cake, there was a Thermos of iced tea.
